A workshop, not a factory

This is the first and key step that determines the geometry of the plank.

1. Flattening: The raw piece of wood is processed on an aligner to achieve a perfectly flat base.
2. Thickness planing: The board then goes to the thicknesser, which gives it a uniform thickness throughout.
3. Edge straightening: The side edges are leveled at a 90-degree angle to the main plane.

At this stage, the board takes its final shape.

1. Cutting to size: Determining the final length and width of the board with a format saw.
2. Hole cutting: The two circular holes shown in the photo are usually cut with a hole saw or sednik (fostner bit) on a table-top drill, which guarantees clean and precise edges.

This process removes the marks left by cutting tools and prepares the wood for finishing.

1. Paper Gradation: It starts with a lower grain (e.g., P80/P120), moving gradually to higher values (P180/P240).
2. Edges: Not only the planes are sanded, but also the interiors of the holes and the edges of the board (known as edge breaking) to get rid of sharp ends and possible splinters.

The final step, which gives the board its final appearance and protects it from external factors.

1. Application:The wax is applied to the dust-cleaned surface with a cotton cloth or sponge.
2. Penetration: The wax penetrates into the structure of the wood, emphasizing the natural grain seen in the picture.
3. Polishing: After the wax dries, the board is polished, giving it a soft satin sheen and smoothness to the touch.
